Shopping Tips for Consignment Sales

As you may or may not know, it’s consignment sale season once again! I have prepped, dropped off and signed up to volunteer – now its time to SHOP TIL I DROP! I will be shopping Friday evening and I can’t wait. I love this time of year, if you have been following my blog for long. So I put some shopping tips together for some first time shoppers out there, and maybe for people who do shop all the time but never have much of a plan! I should pre-face this with the sale I got to is VERY large (75,000 square feet) so it may not be as important for small sale, but to some scale, i’m sure it does! Anywhere, here we go..

Make a List: I find that with all the awesome stuff they have, I forget what I was really looking for. So make a list of the main items you are really looking for, to bring with you to the sale. Think ahead as well. The next sale won’t be for 6 more months — is there a birthday or christmas coming up?

Game Plan: Take that list you just created and figure out what the most important items are. Make a game plan on what you will hit first. For example, you want to buy a really nice stroller, when you get into the sale, go directly to the strollers to get your best selection. Pick what you want, tag it (with the large item tags they provide) and move on to the next item on your list. Once you have gotten through your big items, start browsing for other great deals!

Bring a basket/cart: Bring something to put all your stuff in while you shop! I personally use a large laundry basket and attach a rope or belt to it and drag it around. Some people have the Canton style wire carts, IKEA bags, etc. Some sales may even let you bring wagons, but some pre-sales {mine included} don’t let you do this due to space I would assume. This is all especially important when you shop by yourself, you need your hands free!

Budget: Having a budget is important for most people, i’m sure. I know plenty of people have a very strict budget of what they can send, so they bring that much in cash. Credit cards can be dangerous unless you have a flexible budget or disciplined shopping approach! My goal is to never spend more than I think I will sell. i personally spend under $200 usually for a seasons worth of clothes, christmas gifts, etc.

Pricing: This may be a no brainer, but when you find an item you like, check to see if there are duplicates {applies mostly to toys, equipment}. Since everyone picks their own prices, there can be a big range of prices. Check them all out and pick the price/condition you like best!

Snack: Bring a snack, especially if you are pregnant. You end up being there shopping for much longer than you are expecting and when I went to my first sale being pregnant, I could have really used a snack! I had to sit down and rest for a while.

Time: Speaking of time, plan a good amount of time {babysitter, etc}. There is nothing like being rushed through good deals! Honestly, when I get there, I end up being there for at least 3 hours.

Kids: Some sales and pre-sales have rules about bringing kids, but even if kids are allowed, if you can leave them with family or babysitter, that would be better! It’s nice to have the time without your kiddos to concentrate on shopping and not feel rushed!

Lastly, HAVE FUN! I find the sales a lot of fun. I love finding good bargains and getting Lennox gifts!

Do you have any other tips that I may be forgetting about or you would like to share with me? I would love to hear about your experiences.

I’ll let you know. I’m looking for some sort of push/walk behind car for the baby, a workbench toy for Henry and some clothes for both. I know I’ll end up buying way more than that so I’ll definitely have to set a limit for myself before I step foot in the door.
