This month I had the opportunity to learn an interesting fact about Rack Room Shoes. Did you know that they don’t hire professional models, instead they have a contest, Models Wanted, to find real families to help model their products. This creates a much more genuine ad campaign for Rack Room Shoes.
In 2003, Rack Room Shoes introduced the “Models Wanted” program, searching the country for real customers to star as models in our advertising campaigns. “Models Wanted” was a way for us to celebrate and appreciate our customers. For a few days, they are treated like celebrities complete with limos, make-up and hair stylists, great wardrobe plus lights, cameras and action!
How fun would it be to win a contest like this for your family? Be pampered for the day, be goofy in front of the camera, watch your children find their inner model? Sounds like a rare experience!
I had the chance to do a Q&A with the latest mom winner, Jenny Bradford! Here are some behind-the-scene photos from their photo shoot as well as our questions and answers!
Heather: What made you enter the Models Wanted contest?
Jenny: I received an advertisement in the mail and it said, “We want your family!” We recently had some professional family photos taken so I figured oh, why not? This could be fun! Honestly, I just entered on a whim, I really didn’t think anything would come of it.
Heather: How did your children react to being treated like celebrities for the day?
Jenny: They absolutely loved the experience. Everything from being pampered by professional stylists to playing games with the crew on set – they had a blast. The kids especially loved the limo ride. They have never experienced anything like that before. They couldn’t stop talking about it!
Heather: What was the most surprising moment during the whole Models Wanted experience?
Jenny: The most surprising moment for me was seeing my son, Braden, open up in front of the cameras. My girls, Brooke and Alyssa, have had some experience with modeling in the past, but this was completely new to Braden. It was like he was a totally different person on set. He was working it and loved every minute of it!
Heather: Has this experienced with Rack Room Shoes opened your family up to any other new and fun opportunities?
Jenny: It has given my kids a lot of confidence. They seem much more comfortable in their own skin, and they are already wanting to do another modeling job. The experience also brought us closer together as a family.
Heather: I don’t know about your kids, but my daughter just loves to have lots of shoes and gets excited for new ones! What are your children’s favorite types of shoes?
Jenny: We are an on-the-go family. All of my children participate in sports and love cheering one another on from the stands. I’d probably have to say athletic shoes are their favorite because they are all so active. My girls really enjoyed modeling the ‘girl-y’ style tennis shoes at the photo shoot; the shoes were stylish yet practical for daily wear.
Heather: …And on a non-shoe topic, I’m always looking for fun new activities for our family to do, what is your favorite activity to do for a family fun day?
Jenny: We spend a lot of time with our extended family. We all love to go bowling together – that is always a blast! We are an athletic family, too, so any sporting event is always an activity everyone enjoys. We especially like going to Wake Forest basketball games!
Each year, Rack Room Shoes runs this contest for two seasonal campaigns. You can pick up applications in store from September to December of each year! I will have to remember to fill out an application, don’t you think Lennox would be a good little shoe model? She always has had a lot of shoes…
