Ice cream on Cape Cod just tastes better. Maybe it’s the sea air, maybe its the fact that you are on vacation, but either way – it’s just all around better.
So, one thing you can plan on doing over and over again while on Cape Cod (other than going to the beach) is getting Ice Cream on a nightly basis. There are an over abundance of ice cream shops around cape cod. I don’t know of a bad one but there are a few that stand out from the rest! In my opinion, the best ice cream shops on cape cod are Sundae School, Mad Martha’s and Four Seas Ice Cream. Most are open late (11pm), take cash only and have long lines in the evening (but it’s worth the wait after a long day at the beach!)
While on our vacation, we had many ice cream stops – Lennox of course loves Ice Cream!
The Sundae School is probably the #1 most popular ice cream shop on Cape Cod. They have 3 locations, Orleans, Harwichport and Dennis. Although Dennis has the best atmosphere, Orleans is a good hidden gem as it’s not always as busy. It’s off the beaten path a little and very close to Nauset Beach. All ice cream is of course homemade and they have great hot fudge sundaes! Try the Coffee Oreo ice cream with Hot Fudge, Marshmallow and a real Cherry!
Mad Martha’s is the original Martha’s Vineyard Ice Cream and they are only located on Martha’s Vineyard. Again, great homemade ice cream with large sundaes! It’s a don’t miss spot in Edgartown, Vineyard Haven and Oaks Bluff!
Four Seas Ice Cream
Four Sea’s Ice Cream is the oldest ice cream stop on Cape Cod – so it is the Original Cape Cod Ice Cream! They have been open since 1934 — yes 1934! and they make all their ice cream on premises in the old blacksmith shop. It is not as conveniently located if you are in the Chatham area, as it is in Centerville, but if you are in the area, you must not miss it! My recommendation would be any of the fruit ice creams – Peach and Cantaloupe are AMAZING! Very refreshing and made with local ingredients.
