5 Ways to get the BEST DEALS at Consignment Sales {Giveaway}

It’s my favorite time of year again; Consignment Sale time! I just love when it’s time to shop until I drop and I don’t even have to spend that much money! Just Between Friends Fort Worth is less than a month away!

jbf-fortworth

If you are unfamiliar with Just Between Friends Fort Worth – here is a little background. JBF Fort Worth is the largest children’s consignment sale in Texas – filling 75,000 square feet of shopping space at Fort Worth’s Will Rogers Memorial Center – Amon G. Carter Exhibit Hall. The sale this year runs February 26 – March 9th, with the first public shopping day on March 1st (plus a handful of pre-sales!).

From time to time I get asked how to find the best deals at these sales and if they really are that great. My answer is yes, it really is quite great and here are my 5 Ways to Get the BEST DEALS at a Consignment Sale!

5 Ways to get the Best Deals at Children's Consignment Deals

Shop Early!

The biggest advice or tip that I would give someone is to volunteer, consign, barter or all of the above to shop early! Just Between Friends is run on volunteers and in return for your time, they will give you presale passes. The more time you volunteer (in 4 hour shifts) the earlier you get to shop. They offer presales for 4, 8, 12, 16 hours as well as first time parents. I personally find volunteering to be fun. It’s not like work, at all, for me at least! I always love checking out all the awesome deals that everyone else is finding! It’s like you are vicariously shopping through everyone else. And bonus – if you volunteer and are consigning items, you get a higher percentage of your sales!

Make a GOOD List!

Before you head out to the consignment sale – take inventory of what you have in your child’s closet and playroom. What do they really need and what do they want? Are you buying for a holiday such as Birthday or Christmas? Write down all the sizes your child(ren) are wearing and will be wearing between now and the next consignment sale. When you are formulating your list of what you hope to find – include some retail prices for reference. For example, if you are looking for a Barbie, you know they cost about $12 at target, so $3-$4 is a great deal!

Know the Brands

Know the brands you are looking for and know how much they normally retail for. This is especially important if you are planning on buying a lot of clothes like I do (I buy almost all of her clothes for the coming season at this sale). A shirt from Target for $4 is not as good of a deal as a Mud Pie shirt or Gap shirt for $4. I tend to go through all the racks and pull everything I like – then I go back through it all at the end and put back what really isn’t a good deal or is not as cute as something I found later on. This is also why you will need a lot of time.

Plan Your Time

Leave your self a lot of time and by that I mean A LOT of time! For me, even with a list and knowing the whole shopping process from the past 3 years, I still spend about 4-5 hours at the sale. By the time you go in, look through all the toys, gear, shoes, games, and then the endless racks of clothing – THEN sort through everything you have picked out and pay – it takes time. I don’t feel like I’m there for that long when its all said and done – but having to rush through it all or having someone waiting around for you – will make it more difficult to find the best deals. I also really look forward to shopping for that long, without Lennox with me! Perfect mommy time! If you are shopping during the pre-sales, no children are allowed so its somewhat peaceful!

Attend the Half Price Sale!

Lastly, if you are able to attend the 1/2 Price Sale where most items are reduced 50% – you can find some awesome deals, especially on clothing! I have found some amazing deals on special occasion dresses at the 1/2 Price Sale. You usually have to volunteer for certain shifts or be a mid-sale consignor at Just Between Friends – but it is worth it in my opinion. One word of warning – you will have to sift through a lot of not that great of deals (that is why it’s left over!) to find some hidden gems! One example of a great deal I found is this beautiful special occasion dress for $5 in PERFECT occasion! Lennox wore it to a wedding!

So those are my tips, you can find a bunch of other great tips about shopping, consigning and all the awesome deals I have found here on my blog too!

    I really wish we had consignment sales like this in MA! We have them, but they are no where near as huge as I’ve seen TX bloggers like you post about!

    It is time to stock up for the next few years for my son and daughter (due Mar3). I haven’t been to the JBF Ft Worth sale, but am super excited! My mom an I always pull everything we are interested in, then compare and discuss at the very end. We get better deals and notice if anything is wrong with the item easier. I always feel a little guilty whn we do it, so it is really nice to know other people do it and suggest it. Thank you.

    Great post! I really appreciate the advice to plan to take time, and sometimes that means: no kids with you! Plan to have a sitter.
