The weather has warmed up here in Texas lately. This weekend we were in the low to mid 80’s and the whole family spent the day outside on Sunday, resulting in a little sunburn. I know, a sunburn, in March is a little crazy, but that is how Texas weather is! After a long day in the warm sun, everyone wants a refreshing drink or sweet treat to end a good day, but sometimes those sweet treats or drinks can have a lot of calories. Have you ever seen the number of calories in an ice cream milkshake? Some have up to 700 calories! What a waste of calories! I have put together just the refreshing drink/treat for you, that is only 100 calories!
Growing up in New England, we would have something called a “Lime Rickey”. I was searching online for them and it doesn’t seem to be a common name / recipe so I thought it would be great to share. It may even be a northern thing, I’m not exactly sure. Anyway, a Lime Rickey is similar to an ice cream float but made with fruit flavored soda and sherbet. Sherbet is already naturally low-fat (and dairy free) but soda can add a lot of calories, so when I saw the new Four Ten Calorie sodas from DPSG (Dr Pepper Snapple Group) at Walmart, I thought they would be great to try out.
I purchased the 7UP TEN and Sunkist TEN (they also have A&W Root Beer TEN and Canada Dry TEN) and I can say that these products are great. I’m actually not someone who drinks soda on a daily basis, so when I do – I always drink the full “non diet” versions of soda. The TEN variety tastes as good as the original type and I don’t have to drink all those extra calories! Make sure to grab some when you are at Walmart for the Spring and Summer months (or anytime really!) So onto the yummy drink recipes…
Lime & Orange Sherbet Rickey Recipe
- 7UP TEN or Sunkist TEN Soda
- Lime or Orange Low Fat Sherbet
- Lime / Orange
STEP ONE: Pour your favorite variety of TEN soda into a glass over ice. For a Lime Rickey, use 7UP TEN, for an Orange Rickey, use Sunkist TEN.
STEP TWO: Add two scoops of sherbet to your drink; don’t mix! For a Lime Rickey, use Lime Sherbet, for an Orange Rickey, use Orange Sherbet.
STEP THREE: Add some fresh fruit as a garnish, or squeeze some of the juice on top of the sherbet and enjoy! I personally don’t mix up the sherbet into the drink, I let it mix naturally and eat whatever is left – but that is up to you!
That’s it! Time to enjoy a refreshing, low-calorie drink/sweet treat! Stay informed by following the DPSG on Facebook and Twitter.
