12 Days of Christmas Toys: GoldieBlox and the Movie Machine + Giveaway

We’re into the home stretch! It’s the week of Thanksgiving and Black Friday! In just a few days everyone should be figuring out their Christmas shopping lists. Today’s feature in my 12 Days of Christmas Toys Gift Guide series is an excellent one; GoldieBlox! They have an awesome mission and product!

I first heard of GoldieBlox in NYC this summer at Sweet Suite ’14 and I was so impressed. GoldieBlox takes a classic concept of building sets and puts their own unique twist on it. GoldieBlox has the mission and goal of getting girls building! If you look at the numbers, the engineering world is made up of mostly men, with only 14% female! Coming from a field that is filled with many men, I understand what GoldieBlox’s CEO Debbie Sterling felt went she went through her education with mostly male classmates. I personally knew this going into my field, and had no problem with it – but of course, having more female colleagues would always be nice.

Anyway, back to GoldieBlox, they want to encourage and teach children, with girls in the forefront, that building, construction and any type of engineering is fun! One of their newest building sets is called GoldieBlox and the Movie Machine. This set teaches kids how to make their own movies; how fun is that?

GoldieBlox and the Movie Machine

As with every other set, GoldieBlox and the Movie Machine comes with Goldie’s storybook explaining how she has teamed up with her friends to invent a solution to save the Bloxtown Film Festival from being cancelled. The book also walks kids though how to create the Movie Maker – with easy to follow illustrated steps. I love how they make a story out of it all!

Whew, now that is a building set! With all of these pieces, your child can learn how to build a zoetrope, animation device and learn about illustration. This is for sure a toy that will need some supervision if you are working with a younger child – but I think that it is one that teaches them so much, encourages great skills and gets them thinking hard!

In addition to building this set and making a movie, you can download the Free GoldieBlox app! It will let you and your child learn more about the basics of animation and create animated GIFs. In this app, you can even create pictures to print out and use in the GoldieBlox and Movie Machine toy! So much fun!

My child asked for anything princess for Christmas. I also saw your book giveaway and it was nice to see the step by step instructions and the picture page with it all worded by the picture. Thank you for the giveaway.

My favorite thing is that along with a prescribed way to build the movie machine, you can also creatively arrange the pieces to make your own creation! Love GoldieBlox.

I think it’s great that the kids build it themselves, mine would love to build this and make there own movies!
