How to Entertain Kids in Harwich – Cape Cod

Whether you live on Cape Cod or are just visiting, Harwich Cape Cod has a lot of family and kid attractions to do. Sometime you need a break from being a beach bum and need to do some fun stuff! Even though I grew up on Cape Cod and come back each summer to visit, sometimes its great to be a tourist, especially with a little one! Lennox loves everything about what there is to do in Harwich I think! From the Harwich bumper boats to the go karts and trampolines, there is plenty to do to have a fun family summer afternoon.

Harwich Bumper Boats

The Harwich bumper boats, also known as Grand Slam Family Entertainment, are located on rt. 28 in Harwich. They have a range of activities to enjoy as well. Bumper Boats may be their #1 attraction, but they also have batting cages for all skill levels and good ol’ fashion arcade!

Harwich Bumper Boats

If you plan on heading to the bumper boats, I would suggest wearing your bathing suits or be okay with getting wet! Lennox got soaked during our time on the bumper boats! On a warm day, it sure does feel good!

Harwich Go Karts

Our favorite spot in Harwich are the Go Karts! These go karts have not changed one bit since I was a kid. Bud’s Go Karts are located right down the street from the bumper boats as well on Rt. 28 in Harwichport. In my opinion, these are the best go karts on the cape and the least expensive. Young children can ride with an adult for free and it’s great to race around the circle track with your family! Open late each night too! Riding around in the dark is even more fun!

Harwich Trampolines

The Harwich Trampoline Center located on Rt. 28, is a tried and true family spot as well. This is where you can bring your kids, or your inner child, and they can jump their little hearts away! They have many in ground trampolines. One child per trampoline is their rule and you pay by the # of minutes (around $3 for 10 minutes). This is great because any age can go and you can even switch on and off with another child or adult. I would recommend wearing socks in the summer, as the trampolines do get hot in the sun!

Best Ice Cream Spot in Harwich

One of the best spots on the cape for ice cream is located in Harwich! The Sundae School is a must stop while on Cape Cod. Although, I personally prefer the Orleans location, the Harwichport location is great too, especially on a busy night! All of their ice cream is homemade on location and they have one of the best hot fudge sundaes! Get a hot fudge sundae with your favorite flavor, with marshmallow instead of whipped cream, and a real cherry on top – you won’t be disappointed!

Wychmere Harbor

If you drive by Wychmere Harbor on a sunny weekend afternoon, I bet you will see a bride getting her pictures taken or a family photo session happening. I like stopping by the harbor to take a few photos of the boats in the harbor, letting Lennox run around the park, smell the flowers or even have a quick picnic snack! It’s also a great spot to bring your ice cream and relax! Wychmere Harbor is located on Rt. 28 near all of the above!

5 Must Go Day Trips while Visiting Cape Cod

Top Cape Cod Day Trips
As you may know I grew up on Cape Cod and moved away after college. Thankfully, I still have lots of family there, including my parents, so every summer we can leave the heat of Texas and have a great summer vacation on Cape Cod. In my opinion, Cape Cod is one of the best spots for a summer vacation with family! While visiting Cape Cod you can head to the beach each day or go exploring on a number of day trips! Every summer while we are visiting, we try to get out and do lots of fun things with Lennox. Many of these Cape Cod day trips, Kyle has never done either – and I love letting them experience everything that was “my normal” growing up.
So onto the list.

Top 5 Must Go Day Trips while Visiting Cape Cod

1. Spend the Day in Chatham

Chatham is where I grew up and still call “home”. I never realized how much I enjoyed it, until I left! Chatham has one of the best downtown/main streets on the cape – surrounded by beach.

It is full of gift shops, art galleries, restaurants, ice cream shops, candy stores and centered around a large park (Kate Gould Park) where you will find the Whit Tileston Band Stand for Friday night free band concerts all summer (An awesome family event!)

It has a wide range of gift shops, inns, restaurants, art galleries and candy /ice cream shops. There is also a large park int he middle of it, where you will find the Chatham Band stand and Chatham Band Concert on Friday nights during the summer. It has a history unlike others and you will hear plenty about the Chatham Break!

2. Spend the Day in Provincetown

Provincetown, better known as P-Town is probably the most unique spot on Cape Cod. It may not be what you are expecting when heading to Cape Cod but it is one of the best things to do. I consider this a day trip, because there is so much to do and unless you are staying very close by – it is a little bit of a drive.

There are many things to do while visiting Provincetown. Stroll along Commercial Street, exploring all of the unique shops and restaurants. This street is NOT a pedestrian street – but it mine as well be during the summer! People watching is always fun in Provincetown as well, since the crowd is very diverse. Climb the steps to the top of Pilgrim Monument as well. This is fun with a family – as long as they like to climb stairs, I loved to do this as a kid. Another GREAT activity to do is to head out on the Dolphin Fleet for a whale watch. Whale watches are so much fun – I have been on many and if you never have, it really is a #1 must do! Whales are amazing creatures.

3. Day Trip to Martha’s Vineyard: Take the Ferry!

Martha’s Vineyard is a great island and a great day trip from anywhere on cape cod! You can take the Steamship Authority Ferry over to the Island, which is one of my favorite things to do. You have the option of coming into the ports of Oaks Bluff or Vineyard Haven. Vineyard Haven is where most residence come into, and closer to the popular town of Edgartown, but Oaks Bluff is the more tourist friendly. If you are heading over for the first time – I would recommend taking the ferry into Oaks Bluff!

Oaks Bluff is a sea side town with many shops, restaurants, beaches, the best ice cream shop (Mad Martha’s), unique homes and my favorite, the Flying Horse! The Flying Horse is the Oldest Carousel in America!

If you only do one thing while in Oaks Bluff – make sure you walk through the Gingerbread Village – a neighborhood of over 300 gingerbread style cottages that were built in the mid 1800′s and used as a Methodist camp.

4. Day Trip to Nantucket

Nantucket is the other Island in Cape & Islands. In my opinion, it has a much prettier downtown and more history, but not as many family friendly things to do. It is a smaller area, that is great for an adult trip or beach trip. Enjoy the cobblestone streets downtown, rent (or bring) a bike and ride around town. The town is full of delicious food, beautiful accommodations and vast open beaches.

While downtown, make sure to visit the Whaling Museum to learn so much history about the Island and the whaling industry. You may hear of a familiar name – Moby Dick!

5. Red Sox Game at Fenway

It isn’t hard to head to Boston for the day to check out the sites of Boston or even just head to a Red Sox games at the best ball park in America – Fenway Park!

I love Fenway – it is so fun to go to a game there and so different from any other ball park I have been to. Make sure to arrive early to experience Yawkey Way, have a Remdawg and check out the Green Monstah! If you have time and the Red Sox are in town, you have to go!
