Foolproof Do-it-Yourself Photo Coasters

As a member of the HP Smart Mom Panel for 2015 and a participate in the latest #StickaPic party campaign, I have been having lots of fun using the new HP Social Media Snapshots product. I had planned on having a party with our neighbors before moving, but if you know me in real life, you’ll know that we have had a lot of unplanned changes and stress from selling our house and buying a new house. Things are finally calming down so it was time to test this product out!

If you are unfamiliar with this new product, the HP Social Media Snapshots are just that – a way to print out your social media photos directly from your smartphone or tablet. The photo paper has a sticky backing and they print out in the style of Polaroids (4×5 inches). Pin them up, stick them up or use them in a craft – there are so many projects you can use this photo paper for.

Now that we are currently settled into a rental house for a month (oi!) – I’m trying to have lots of fun with Lennox. This weekend we had a craft morning and started working on some Christmas presents featuring HP Social Media Snapshots.

This Christmas will be full of personalized goodies for our family and the first item we tested out was making Photo Coasters. I’ve always seen tutorials on how to make them, but they required mod podge or nail polish remover, and lots of other materials that were messy. But I have now solved that problem and made making photo coasters pretty much foolproof! Here is what you need to do.

How to make easy DIY Photo Coasters:

STEP ONE: Using the HP Snapshots mobile app and HP Social Media Snapshots paper, print out your favorite photos from either your camera roll, Facebook, Twitter or Flickr. The HP Snapshots app is available for free in the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store.

STEP TWO: If using a tile that is 4×4, you will find that the photo is just the right size! Cut out the photos for each coaster.

STEP THREE: Taking your first photo, peel the back off the photo paper to reveal the sticky backing. This is perfect for this project as there is no glue required!

STEP FOUR: Stick the photo onto your tile. Once you stick it down, since the backing is so sticky – it will stay put. Try to make sure you have no air bubbles.

STEP FIVE: Once you are ready to seal your photo coaster, bring outside and spray with an acrylic gloss finisher. You can find this at Michaels. This spray will protect the photo as well as give the tile a glossy look. You will need to spray the tiles 3-4 times, drying for 20-30 minutes between layers. Let dry completely.

STEP SIX: Once completely dry, turn over and adhere felt dots to each corner to help protect the surface the coasters will set on.

Color on the with sharpies, add glitter, glue, gems, etc. The possibilities are endless and its a great project to do with any age group – young and old.photo-coaster-how-to-04

One of the best things we have bought this summer is a new grill! We never used our old grill but now that we have switched to charcoal, we have been cooking on the grill more than we have been cooking in the kitchen. It’s great on dishes, heat inside the house and Kyle is doing the cooking – so I can’t complain!

One thing that we introduced Lennox to was roasting marshmallows on the grill after dinner. She loves to come out and toast some marshmallows as her dessert – but sometimes, she can be impatient and want to roast marshmallows when we still have quite a while until dinner – or even on the nights we aren’t grilling at all.

I had seen a cute idea a while back for making your own personal marshmallow roaster and decided to try it myself, and make it about as girly as you could make it, just for Lennox! Before I could start, I had to get some new grilling supplies at Walmart, and of course I picked up Kraft Jet Puffed Marshmallows! Walmart also has a number of other Kraft products that are essential to your grilling nights!

We made some delicious corn on the cob to go with our ready-made dinner from the Walmart Deli / Marketplace, but Lennox just had to try out her own marshmallow roaster first, so we let her give it a try. It worked out great and it was really easy to make. Here is what you need to do.

What you need:

  • Small Terra-cotta flower pot
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Charcoal
  • Kraft Jet Puffed Marshmallows (the best!)
  • Skewers
  • optional – glitter and other decorations for the pot

Instructions:

STEP ONE: After gathering all of your materials, which you can find at Walmart, decorate your terra-cotta pot however you wish. We used glitter because, well, we have a super girly girl and she loves glitter (as do I)!

STEP TWO: Take a few small sheets of aluminum foil and line the inside of the pot. Press the aluminum foil tightly against the sides to form a cup inside the pot. Using heavy duty foil is recommended but I tried with regular weight, and it worked okay as well.

STEP THREE: Fill the pot with a few pieces of charcoal. Using some charcoal that is already presoaked in lighter fluid is the easiest and safest with kids.

STEP FOUR: Light the coals, there should quickly be a small flame – you can now start roasting your  Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows!

Note: The coals will stay hot until they completely burn out – so either leave the terra-cotta post somewhere  it is safe or dump the coals into the grill when you are done. You should be able to toast quite a few marshmallows from the heat this personal marshmallow roaster will let off!

Now that you have your marshmallow roaster complete, it’s time to make some Smores to go along with your easy dinner!

STEP TWO: Once the marshmallow is complete, take two of your favorite chocolate chip cookies (or any kind of cookie for that matter) and sandwich the toasted Jet-Puffed Marshmallow in-between the cookies!

These are great to eat right away or even saved for later. We made them before dinner and they were still great by dessert time! Lennox had a lot of fun and I see us using this little roaster many times throughout the year!
