Living in Tornado Alley

Living in Tornado Alley

Living in Tornado Alley

As you know, I’m not from Texas originally. I’m originally from a small seaside town in Massachusetts. Tornadoes, earthquakes, and hurricanes were not things we had to worry about, pretty much ever. We did have the occasional hurricane threat, but by the time it would get that far up the coastline, it was not much of a storm and to me, hurricanes are not as scary, since there is SO much warning.

Now that I live outside of Dallas, TX – which is part of tornado alley – things are a little different when it comes to weather. In the spring, especially, if there is warning of severe weather it can range from just heavy rain, to extreme thunder and lighting, hail the size of a baseball (or bigger) and tornados.

This past week, has been an especially startling reminder of where I am now living. Last week there were a number of tornados that touched down outside of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Full neighborhoods were leveled, including a whole habitat for humanity neighborhood in then Granbury area. Then over the weekened there were some tornados in Oklahoma, and today? Well today was a especially scary for people who live in the Oklahoma City area. A massive tornado, 1-2 miles wide, on the ground for over 30 minutes and going approximately 200MPH tore apart neighborhoods, businesses and sadly, schools. There are neighborhoods that you would never even know homes existed. The debris being dropped somewhere unknown, an elementry school destroyed while school was in session, and a devistated town of Moore, OK.

When the storms are that bad, there just isn’t that much you can do. You can get in your safe spot, but if your whole house is swept away, you’re unfortuantly, out of luck!

When I moved here and started experiencing all this, I had NO idea what to do! For those of you who have never experienced a tornado in the area, this is what we do:

Get in your safe spot — the most interior room or area in your house, usually a bathroom with no windows, closet, under the stairs or in the bathtub. Many will get in a bathtub and put a mattress over them – to protect them from flying debris. In my house, we get into the 1/2 bathroom or master bathroom closet. We pile everyone in there and turn the weather/news on to follow the weather tracking.

Listen for the sirens. Every town here has the equivalent to air raid sirens, and when there is bad weather in the area, they will sound to make everyone aware. They have testing days, usually the beginning of the month, on a clear day – but trust me, you forget about that and freak out for a few moments at first!!

Other than that? You just have to wait it out. I hope I never have to “live through” a tornado — hopefully we will escape any tornados that come to our area, but while we still love here, it will always be a stressful situation when they arise!

But tonght, as I finish this post, my thoughts go out to those n Oklahoma. I can only imagine what they are all going through, especially the parents of those sweet, innocent children killed while at school. I don’t want to see more headlines like this anytime soon:

Texas Bluebonnets Success!

I was really starting to get worried that Bluebonnets 2013 just wasn’t going to happen this year. Easter came and went, and there were no Bluebonnets to be found in the Dallas / Fort Worth area! The fields we usually go to, didn’t have a Bluebonnet insight – they looked like they had been mowed over or just didn’t grow correctly this year. We did have a late freeze, so maybe that is why?

Either way, I was getting disappointed I wouldn’t get the traditional texas bluebonnet photo of Lennox for this year. Thankfully, last weekend we attended Kyle’s mom’s wedding at the Gaylord Texan and since my mother in law works there, she let me in on the fact that they have a HUGE hill of bluebonnets growing – yes!

After the wedding, we headed over there and low and behold, a full hill of bluebonnets, and various other wild flowers

And for the first time ever, we actually got a full family photo in the Bluebonnets. SUCCESS!

The top one is much more a classic smile, the bottom? Much more Lennox style!

I thought this photo was funny. It looks like Lennox is leading the Terrell gang back to the cars so she could go get some dinner! Enough is enough, time to eat! (See the hill of Bluebonnets in the background?)

Texas Bluebonnets

Texas Tuesday: Bluebonnets

This week I am co-hosting the Texas Tuesday Link Up Party with Amanda from Princess of the Panhandle and Crystal from Masons Mama. This is a chance for Texas bloggers (or avid Texas fans!) to show off how awesome Texas really is.

Princess of the Panhandle

Before I moved to Texas, I had been here a handful of times visiting my sister, but really, I knew nothing about Texas other than it was extremely different from where I grew up. This is not the quaint little sea-side village on ol’ Cape Cod! I did, however, really like it.

I know that many people think it is just a huge state with no beauty, but really, it is so much more! There are so many opportunities here and there is still plenty of natural beauty. Yes, it is very different from “my home” in New England. Yes, it’s 110 degrees in the summer and everything turns brown. Yes, it’s big and busy. But there is still beauty to be found. I could give you a big long list of beautiful places to go (that I haven’t even experienced yet), but I will save those for when we actually experience them! But, today I want to share with you some wild beauty that appears every spring. Bluebonnets.

Texas Bluebonnets

Texas Bluebonnets – Have you heard of them? They are one of the official state flowers of Texas. They are a blue/purple wild flower that fill fields and line the highways in the spring. You are probably thinking I’m crazy, why am I telling you about a wild flower/weed that grows on the side of the highway, in Texas of all places…

… Well, they are pretty and they are a huge part of Texas! When they start appearing, those empty fields and vast open highways get full of photographers and families, getting their annual bluebonnet pictures. They appear just around Easter time, so they make great Easter photos and fun family pictures. I bet you can go into the majority of family homes in the area and find a family or child photo with bluebonnets.

Texas Bluebonnets - A Texas Tradition

They only are really in full effect for a week or two, but while they are here, the state never mows them over. Some think it is illegal to pick bluebonnets, but after some research today, I found out that it is NOT illegal. Maybe I’ll have to pick some this time!

They haven’t shown up quite yet for me to share this years pictures (I am looking forward to better pictures this year with my new camera – more on that soon!), but here is a look at pictures we took over the past two years during bluebonnet season.

So if you are ever in Texas in the spring, look for the Bluebonnets and stop and take a picture!
